Over time it breaks down the chemical structure of the artwork and causes the colors to fade. This is what causes photos and paper to become yellow and brittle. What makes this especially unfortunate is that the damage is irreversible. The damage is irreversible and can significantly reduce the value of the artwork, both financially and sentimentally.
