Puttying
What is puttying?
Puttying is a method used to fill the gap between the glass and its installation frame. For this purpose a special compound called window putty is used. Window putty is a material that hardens over time, forming a weather-resistant and tight connection between the glass and the frame.
In which situations is puttying useful?
Puttying is used when glass needs to be installed or replaced. The use of window putty is mandatory, for example, for the windows of buildings under heritage protection, in order to preserve their original appearance. We also recommend using window putty instead of glazing beads for wooden windows, because when installed correctly it lasts significantly longer in our climate compared to glazing beads and retains heat better.
What are the technical limitations of puttying?
When puttying, it is important to consider certain technical limitations. Like everything else, window putty also has its service life, after which it may lose its plasticity and tightness. We have seen windows where putty has lasted for decades. Unfortunately, putty cannot be used if window or door frames are made from materials that are not compatible with window putty or where the putty does not adhere properly to the surface. For example, if the frames are made of metal, traditional window putty may not adhere well to them and may require special metal adhesive instead.
