UV bonding

What is UV bonding?

UV bonding is a modern technique in the glass industry used to create strong and transparent joints between different glass pieces. This process involves using a special UV adhesive that hardens quickly under ultraviolet radiation. Therefore both sunlight and a UV lamp are suitable for this purpose. UV bonding results in a durable and aesthetically pleasing joint between glass surfaces without visible adhesive marks. In UV bonding, the edges of the glass must always be ground.

What is UV bonding used for?

UV bonding allows the production of items such as glass furniture, glass display cases and glass cubes. With UV adhesive it is also possible to glue wooden or metal parts onto glass, therefore UV bonding is used both in the furniture industry and in interior design. UV bonding can be used for bonding both non-tempered and tempered glass, and in the case of tempered glass it results in an especially strong and therefore safe solution.

Where is UV bonding not suitable?

UV bonding is unfortunately not suitable for all glass-related solutions. For example, UV bonding may be problematic for attaching very dark tinted glass or back-painted glass, because they do not allow enough UV light to pass through for the adhesive to cure. In such cases alternative bonding methods can be used, such as MS polymer adhesive or special fixing elements. UV bonding also cannot be used for making aquariums because UV adhesive is not waterproof and is not suitable for very humid environments.
